The Story

Gutta-percha is a genus of tropical trees native to the Southeast Asia and northern Australasia regions. An inelastic natural latex material is produced from the sap of the trees which is also referred to as gutta-percha. The beneficial properties were discovered by Westerners in 1842, and the substance was initially used as an electrical insulator. A few years later gutta-percha became a popular material used to manufacture furniture and then mourning jewelry because it was easily carved and very resilient.

This unusual locket from the Victorian (ca1880s) era is a wonderful example of jewelry crafted from gutta-percha! The lovely gutta-percha locket is oval in shape, and features a smooth and simple surface. The frontside of the locket is decorated with a unique "knotted monogram"-motif, which is encrusted with rose cut diamonds. All of the diamonds are bead-set, and add a wonderful contrast to the dark hue of the gutta-percha. The locket opens and closes with a discreet snap-shut mechanism. The inside of the locket features two hollow compartments, which would be perfect for storing small photographs or mementos. The left side of the locket currently holds a Victorian-era portrait of a man. The top of the locket features a complementary bail, allowing the piece to attach to a favorite chain. An eye-catching piece, this locket would make a great addition to any Victorian-era collection!

Measurements: The gutta-percha pendant hangs approximately 2 1/2" long (including the bail at the top), and measures about 1 3/4" wide and 3/8" thick.

Condition: The pendant is in excellent antique condition. Besides normal surface wear, there are no significant chips or scratches to the carved gutta percha. All of the diamonds are secure and intact. The complementary bail is intact and in working order.
